Here’s what to expect:
The worship services are casual and comfortable. Come as you are!
We usually choose a book of the Bible and cover it completely. Usually in the winter and spring we focus on one of the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John). For the remainder of the year we select a book to explore.
The 8:30 worship service is usually a small gathering; perhaps only a dozen. It varies a lot during the year, and is often a time for experimentation. During the seasons of Advent (the four Sundays before Christmas) and Lent (the five Sundays before Easter) we use “breakfast church”. We gather in the fellowship hall for a service that combines breakfast with Bible readings, a discussion style sermon, and prayers. From Memorial Day to Labor Day this service meets in our outdoor chapel.
At 9:30 Sunday School classes meet. Four year olds through 6th graders meet in a one room schoolhouse type of setting to learn basic Bible stories, sing, and do projects. 7th and 8th graders usually meet for Confirmation Class. Teenagers and adults meet for the class, “Where We Are Today.” It is a gathering that explores current events, and often hot button issues, from the perspective of faith. We stay respectful, but not everyone agrees all the time!
At the 10:30 service we use a spoken order of worship and sing a mix of contemporary and traditional music. About 50 people attend this service in person. It is also available by Zoom.
About Holy Communion
We celebrate Holy Communion every week, but it alternates between services. Everyone who is baptized is welcome to receive. You don’t have to be a Lutheran or a member of St. John’s. If you don’t wish to receive, that’s okay. You don’t have to. You’re welcome to stay at your seat and not come forward to the altar. Please contact us if you have any questions.
